The prevalence of kidney stone disease is increasing worldwide. The recurrence rate of urinary stones is estimated to be up to 50%. Nephrolithiasis is associated with increased risk of chronic and end stage kidney disease.

We compared the safety and efficacy of aquablation and transurethral prostate resection for the treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia.

In a double-blind, multicenter, prospective, randomized, controlled trial 181 patients with moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms related to benign prostatic hyperplasia underwent transurethral prostate resection or aquablation.

Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is considered the gold standard for minimally invasive treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostate enlargement of <80ml. Although durable and effective, TURP carries the risk of significant side effects, including infection and bleeding, and the risk of dilutional hyponatremia.
