WMSM 2012 - A natural lubricant superficial zone protein (SZP) is enhanced by transforming growth factor-β (TGFB) treatment of cell cultures derived from PD patients - Session Highlights

CHICAGO, IL USA (UroToday) - A second study by Thomas Schmit, et al.looked at how transforming growth factor-β stimulates collagen and elastin deposits.

wmsm thumbSZP, also referred to as lubricin, is a mucous-like glycoprotein that is a lubricant for the collagen-rich connective tissues, including the surface of the articular cartilage, tendons and meniscus.

Researchers concluded TGFB increases the synthesis of SZB in the cells of PD plaque tissue. SZB may serve as future marker to detect active TGFB and be helpful to define cell subpopulations in PD plaques.

Presented by Thomas M. Schmid, et al.* at the annual World Meeting on Sexual Medicine (WMSM) - August 26 - 30, 2012 - Sheraton Chicago - Chicago, Illinois USA
