WMSM 2012 - Prostate cancer diagnosis is associated with an increased risk of erectile dysfunction following prostate biopsy - Session Highlights

CHICAGO, IL USA (UroToday) - This session provided a discussion of the transient change in erectile function and LUTS after prostate needle biopsy (PNBx). Some studies suggest this is related to the type of anesthesia used.

wmsmIn a study of 81 men (mean age 61; mean PSA 5.2 ± 3.4; mean QoL 1.9 ± 1.5), prostate cancer diagnosis did not influence the severity of LUTS following PNBx per AUA-SI and Qol scores. However, diagnosis did impact erectile function. These men were 3.39 times more likely to have a significant decrease in IIEF compared to the men who were not diagnosed with cancer. Anxiety and psychological changes were related to being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Dr. Helfand concluded erectile function should be assessed prior to PNBx in order to have a benchmark post biopsy.

Presented by Brian Helfand, MD* at the annual World Meeting on Sexual Medicine (WMSM) - August 26 - 30, 2012 - Sheraton Chicago - Chicago, Illinois USA
