EAU 2018: Karl Storz® Drillcut™ Versus Lumenis® Versacut™ Prostate Tissue Morcellation Devices after Holmium Laser Enucleation: A Prospective Randomized Controlled Trial

Copenhagen, Denmark (UroToday.com)  Dr. Ibrahim introduced a new morcellator with unique features that can be used for prostate morcellation during the holmium laser enucleation of the prostate procedure.

Currently, there are two tissue morcillators which differ from each other by the type of movement of the cutting blades (guillotine vs. oscillation) and shape of the blade (non-toothed vs toothed): The new DrillCut™ (Karl Storz inc.) morcellator has an oscillating toothed blade and the VersaCut™ (versapulse, Lumenis Inc.) has a non-toothed guillotine blade. Dr. Ibrahim presents the first data of the safety, efficacy, and cost effectiveness of the DrillCut™, as well as a comparison to the VersaCut™.

For this comparison, patients undergoing the holmium laser enuclation of the prostate procedure for symptomatic benign prostatic hyperplasia were randomized to either Karl Storz® DrillCut™ or Lumenis® VersaCut™ for the prostate morcellation step. A total of 82 patients were included in this study with 41 patients for each device. Average age, prostate volume, serum PSA, IPSS score, Quality of life score, Qmax, and post-void residual urine pre-procedure were similar for each group with no significant difference. Intraoperative factors for each group such as enucleation time, morcellation time, total operation time, complications, and difficult morcellation was similar for both groups with no significant difference.

However, the VersaCut™ morcellator showed significantly higher mean morcellation efficiency compared to the DrillCut™ (4.9 vs 3.6 g/min). Additionally, the costs of the new DrillCut™ morcellator was significantly higher when compared with the VersaCut™ morcellator ($247.5 CAD vs. $160.9 CAD).
