Inflammatory Bowel Disease vs. Adverse In-Hospital Outcomes after Radical Prostatectomy - Beyond the Abstract
The use of a large national database and propensity score matching strengthens the findings, although limitations inherent to administrative data—such as lack of information on disease severity, prior abdominal surgery, or medical therapy—should temper interpretation. The observation that CD patients experience worse outcomes than UC patients is biologically plausible given the transmural nature of CD and the higher likelihood of prior surgical interventions. Importantly, the data suggest that minimally invasive approaches are associated with fewer complications, supporting their use when feasible. Still, the relatively small IBD cohort and absence of detailed disease-level variables highlight the need for prospective studies to confirm these results and guide individualized surgical planning.
