Cellular Proliferation Imaging with 18F-FMAU PET/CT as Adjunct to mpMRI in Image-Guided Biopsy of Suspected Prostate Cancer - Beyond the Abstract

In view of our prior encouraging preclinical study, in this small-scale pilot human study, we showed that 18F-FMAU PET/CT may complement standard of care mpMRI by potentially detecting additional sites of cancer.

However, PET detection of cancer based on cellular proliferative activity will also likely be contingent upon tumor cellularity and the limitations imposed by the PET spatial resolution. Additional experience will be needed to decipher whether 18F-FMAU PET/CT adds distinctive value to mpMRI in localizing clinically significant prostate cancer. Moreover, the potential diagnostic utility of 18F-FMAU PET in this clinical setting will need to be compared to the recent promising results in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer using a composite mpMRI PI-RADS score and PSMA PET PRIMARY score (the P score).
