Catheter-Associated Urinary Tract Infections Surveillance and Prevention.

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are common and expensive hospital-acquired infections. Many CAUTIs are preventable, with the 2 greatest risk factors being initial placement of the catheter when it may not be necessary and longer than necessary duration of catheterization. Alternatives to indwelling urinary catheters include intermittent straight catheterization and the use of external catheters and should be considered over indwelling catheterizations if possible. If an indwelling urinary catheter is required, aseptic insertion technique and maintenance should be performed. Collaborative, multidisciplinary intervention efforts can help prevent CAUTI successfully.
