Can Preoperative Transurethral Catherization Reduce the Risk of Urethral Stricture after Endoscopic Treatment of the Prostate? - Beyond the Abstract

Urethral stricture is a known complication after endoscopic BPH surgery, with few proven ways to reduce its incidence. This article suggests that preoperative transurethral catheterization may passively dilate and relax the urethra, reducing trauma during instrumentation.

Drawing parallels with ureteral prestenting, the authors note improved urethral compliance in catheterized patients. If confirmed, this simple and low-cost approach could help prevent a difficult complication. It may be particularly beneficial in patients with a narrow urethra or higher baseline risk for stricture formation.
