MP 23-1 Evaluation of a New Mechanized Computer Assisted Single Port Bedside "Robot" in a Porcine Model: SurgiBot: Raymond Leveillee

Laparo-endoscopic-single-site surgery (LESS) provides a better cosmetic result for patients with only one port site at the umbilicus. However, LESS may introduce challenges such as increased instrument clashing and hand crossing during surgical procedures. In this ePoster, Dr. Leveillee presented a novel surgeon-operated robotic system, the SurgiBot, designed with articulating channels and mechanical assisted catheter-based instruments to reduce clashing and hand crossing during LESS procedures.

In this proof of concept study, Dr. Leveillee and colleagues performed unilateral nephrectomy procedures in a porcine model using the SurgiBot system. They performed nephrectomies in nine pigs under general anesthesia and reported all procedures were completed successfully without conversion to open or multi-port laparoscopic procedures. Furthermore, they reported no adverse events and low estimated blood losses is in all surgeries using the SurgiBot system.

Based on their results, the authors concluded that LESS surgery is feasible using the SurgiBot system. Since this is the first trial with this novel device, the authors also acknowledged that further investigation is needed to determine if this system improves surgeon dexterity, reduces hand cross over, and improves surgical outcomes.
