San Diego, CA USA (UroToday.com) Anne Suskind from The University of California, San Francisco presented data on transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in nursing home patients. The authors used data from inpatient Medicare claims and the Minimum Data Set for Nursing Homes to evaluate nursing home patients undergoing TURP.
Almost 60% of patients had a foley catheter prior to TURP, and out of these patients with a catheter preoperatively, at one year after TURP 32% had died, 64% had a foley catheter and only 4% had no foley catheter. The presence of foley catheter at baseline and decline in activities of daily living prior to surgery were associated with increased risk of failure.
Overall, this data has significant implications for counseling nursing home patients who are candidates for TURP on predictors for success after surgery.
