| Metastasis has long been viewed as part of a binary state, not only in terms of diagnosis but also in treatment decisions. However, this prevailing view of metastasis has been challenged and emerging evidence suggests metastatic disease is instead better described as a spectrum of metastatic proclivity currently represented clinically by enumeration of lesions. The spectrum theory postulates the existence of a low volume metastatic state, termed oligometastasis, where individuals with a limited number of lesions, typically five or less, have disease that biologically acts more in a locoregional fashion rather than extensive systemic metastasis. |
