Kelvin Vo: Dear Viewers, In our study, 43 patients with resonance stents placed for benign uretural obstructions were retrospectively included. We assessed long-term impact of chronic resonance stent placement on renal function, using serum creatinine levels, estimated glomerular filtration rates, Lasix renal scans, and CT-based renal parenchymal volume measurements. Durability was measured as the number of resonance stent exchanges required, during follow-up incidents of encrustation, and the average indwell time.

At a mean follow-up of 26 months, renal function was preserved, with no significant changes in EGFR, parenchymal volume, or split renal function. Patients on average replaced their stents 1.1 times, with a mean indwell time of 9.7 months. 11 patients underwent premature stent replacement or removal, while four out of all patients had severe encrustation, requiring laser lithotripsy. The mean indwell time for the encrusted resident stent group was 12-and-a-half months. Overall, 12 patients had a mean stent indwell time of greater than or equal to 12 months.

There is a 5.6%, 37%, or 52% cost reduction by using a resonance stent, compared to a polymeric stent when exchanging two, three, or four times per year. Resonance stent deployment for benign uretal obstruction results in successful preservation of renal function, and parenchymal volume, during a mean follow up of 2.2 years. Mean indwell time was 9.7 months, making the resonance stent a cost-effective alternative to stenting with a polymeric stent.
