The Virility Paradox, A Book Review with Charles Ryan

(Length of Discussion: 28 min)

Dr. Kelly Parsons interviews Dr. Charles Ryan on the release of his first book The Virility Paradox, The Vast Influence of Testosterone on our Bodies, Minds, and the World Around Us.

Dr. Ryan shares with Dr. Parsons the inspiration that drove him to write The Virility Paradox and why it is so much more than a “muscle and sex chemical”.  With the influence it has played on evolution, it’s impact on the way we interact with one another, and the impact it has on our bodies and our brains, Dr. Ryan realized that this story has never really been told before and believed as a medical oncologist he has a unique viewpoint to tell the story.

“As urologist and oncologist in treating prostate cancer, we take one of life’s most important chemicals and deplete it in our patients and that is what controls the cancer and I thought wow, this is facinating”.

He discusses a number of books which have influenced his writing and which have inspired him to write.  Reflecting on some of the challenging and satisfying aspects of writing is first book Dr. Ryan explained that finding the perfect place to thread the needle between science and story telling to appeal a broader audience was a welcomed challenged.  The book is not necessarily a scientific endeavor but more of a creative endeavor.  A series of stories of people affected by this molecule.

He highlights The Virility Paradox appeals to both men and women being published in the shadows of the “Me To” movement explaining reevaluating the role of testosterone in the workplace and the current state of the media make this book extremely timely.

The book in a way fuels the question “Has testosterone outlived it’s full usefulness in a society.”  With the explanation of how our society has long since been removed from the “kill to eat” society and is now the “office space society” Dr. Ryan hopes readers gather the vastness of this chemical and not just the traditional strength definition but a lot of what is current in society today.
