AUA 2011 - Treatment interval frequency of percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation (PTNS): Preliminary results from the step study - Session Highlights

WASHINGTON, DC USA (UroToday.com) - This study looked at the sustainability of PTNS (using Urgent® PC) over 12 months in a patient population with OAB symptoms that reported initial success following a 12-week program. The study was called STEP or Sustained Therapeutic Effects of Percutaneous Tibial Nerve Stimulation. Subjects received PTNS in an individualized protocol and the number of treatments per month ranged from 1.2 to 1.9. Voiding diary parameters at 6 and 12 months were significant for improvement compared to baseline for frequency, incontinence episodes, nighttime voids and moderate to severe urgency episodes. This study seems to show that a certain number of patients will need to have at least a monthly PTNS monthly following an initial 12 week treatment program.
