Mismatch Repair Gene Alterations and Microsatellite Instability in Upper Tract Urothelial Carcinoma
Bishoy M. Faltas, MD
A research study examining the alterations in the mismatch repair genes and microsatellite instability status in upper tract urothelial carcinoma compared them to bladder urothelial carcinoma. The investigators obtained tissue samples, patient information, and performed an immunohistochemical analysis of mismatch repair proteins, cases with any mismatch repair loss on immunohistochemistry were tested for microsatellite instability status.

Local Tumor Bed Recurrence Following Partial Nephrectomy in Patients with Small Renal Masses
Zhamshid Okhunov, MD
For select patients, partial nephrectomy has become the gold standard as a nephron-sparing alternative to radical nephrectomy. As the future of RCC is nonsurgical management options, Wood et al. wanted to further define what characteristics put patients at a higher risk for local tumor bed recurrence.

Treatment Facility Volume and Survival in Patients with Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Registry-based Analysis - Beyond the Abstract
Shreyas S. Joshi, MD
Treatment facility volume is directly correlated with survival outcomes for patients treated for de novo metastatic renal cell carcinoma. Following the statistical conclusions of this study, one can extrapolate this benefit indefinitely as treatment facility volume increases.

Racial Differences in Urinary Bladder Cancer in the United States
Studies are needed to better understand the racial differences in incidence, presentation, outcomes, and biology of urinary bladder cancer. The investigators in this study collected information on patients diagnosed with urinary bladder cancer from 1972-2014 using the SEER database to begin addressing this knowledge gap.

Outcomes of Partial Cystectomy for Selected Bladder Cancer Patients
Radical cystectomy is currently the gold standard operative treatment for localized (T2-T4a) muscle invasive bladder cancer or recurrent high-risk non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. Radical cystectomy can be associated with complications that may negatively impact the quality of life for the patient. This study evaluated complications, effectiveness, and quality of life of cT2 cM0 MIBC patients who underwent partial cystectomy.

The Significance of Persistent Muscle Invasive After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy
Downstaging of muscle-invasive bladder cancer following neoadjuvant chemotherapy before radical cystectomy has been correlated with higher survival rates. This study compared survival rates in patients with persistent muscle invasive bladder cancer following neoadjuvant chemotherapy and radical cystectomy compared to similarly staged patients who underwent radical cystectomy alone.

Predictors of Long-Term Survival after Renal Cancer Surgery
In order to preserve renal function, partial nephrectomy has been shown to be more effective in terms of functional outcomes without compromising oncologic outcomes. Long-term outcomes after partial and radical nephrectomy remain unanswered. A retrospective study that evaluated the long-term impact of renal cancer surgery, both partial and radical nephrectomy, on renal functional outcomes and survival was reported.
