SUFU 2019: The Development of the Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score Short Form (NBSS-SF)

Miami, FL (UroToday.com) The neurogenic bladder symptom score is a 24 item validated questionnaire with 3 domains (incontinence, storage/voiding, and consequence). This applies to patients that have spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis or spina bifida. There is also a stand-alone quality of life question but overall this questionnaire does not address quality of life. This can be analogous to AUA SS for BPH. AS for many patients, 20+ questions is a lot to answer. Dr. Welk presents a short form that was assessed for reliability and validity from the neurogenic bladder symptom score.

This study was completed with existing datasets and the 8 questions for the short form were picked from the original questionnaire by looking at the level of responsiveness (measured by the standardized response mean, SRM).

The validity and reliability were then assessed. Intraclass coefficient (ICC2,1) was used for reliability and validity assessed with high Cronbach alpha in cohorts 1 and 2. He explained that a value > 0.7 means it is a good test. These scores are similar to the original questionnaire, therefore, validating the short form and that it compares. It was mentioned that individual domains do not perform as well as the original however this short form with 8 questions has good validity and can be utilized efficiently in the clinic. The longer questionnaire is better utilized to assess different domains. This short form is not used in clinical practice yet.
