#WCE2014 - Single versus dual-console robot-assisted radical prostatectomy:
Impact on intraoperative and postoperative outcomes in a teaching institution - Session Highlights

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (UroToday.com) - Many resident training programs have adopted a dual console Intuitive Da Vinci Robotic Surgical system in hopes of aiding robotic surgical training. This allows two surgeons to control the robotic arms at the same time, in parallel, or quickly alternating between the surgeons.

wceDr. Aaron Lay presented new data with regard to outcomes after introducing the robot. They looked at whether the introduction of the dual console helps with patient outcomes or has any real benefit in a residency training program.

They reviewed 381 cases of robotic prostatectomy (RALP) by a single surgeon between 2006-2012, comparing those patients who had their RALP before and after introduction of the Dual Console at the University of Texas, Southwestern. Each surgery was performed with the chief resident or fellow assisting and at the console.

Interestingly, after introducing the dual console, mean operative time was reduced from 222 minutes to 171 minutes. Fewer intraoperative and postoperative complications were seen, and there were no differences in functional (continence, erectile function) or oncologic outcomes.
