MIAMI, FL USA (UroToday.com) - This was a retrospective review of all men (n=25) who had >1 cystoscopy at a single institution, by 2 experienced urologists, between 2002 and 2014, and had ≥ 3 month follow-up. The determination of urethral stricture was according to the Purohit-Blaivas staging system. Exclusion criteria were men who were performing intermittent catheterization and those that had intervention between cystoscopies.

Thirty-three strictures were found, and in those cases, indications for the cystoscopy were bladder cancer surveillance (17/33), voiding symptoms (5/33), hematuria (2/33), bladder neck contracture (1/33), and urethrocutaneous fistula (1/33).
The authors felt that the Purohit-Blaivas staging system provided an easy lexicon for documenting urethral strictures.
