SUFU WM 2014 - Laser vaporization of the prostate with the 180-W XPS-Greenlight laser in patients with large prostates - Session Highlights

MIAMI, FL USA ( - It was interesting to see several research posters that involved male subjects and prostate research. This was one of them.

The study’s objective was to evaluate outcomes, efficacy, and safety in male patients with prostate volumes larger and smaller than 100mL. sufu xThree-hundred sixty-two patients underwent photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP) with the 180W XPS Greenlight laser from July 2010 to June 2012 at 2 institutions -- Weill Cornell, Medical College, USA and University Hospital Basel, Switzerland. Patients with a prostate volume of ≥ 100ml were older (75.3 vs. 71.0 years p=0.005) and had a higher rate of preoperative retention (53.0% vs. 29.6%; p<0.001) compared to patients with smaller prostate volumes. Postoperatively, micturition symptoms (IPSS, QoL) and voiding parameters (Qmax, postvoid residual volume) improved in both groups of patients, with no significant differences noted in the relative improvements.

Over a follow-up of 2 years, the rates of postoperative urinary tract infection, postoperative retention, urethral stricture, and reoperation did not differ between the 2 groups. The authors concluded that PVP with the 180W XPS Greenlight™ laser is a safe and effective minimal-invasive treatment option for patients with large prostate volumes. Operative times and laser energy requirements are higher in patients with larger prostates, but this did not increase adverse events.
