SUFU WM 2015 - Subspecialty training in urology: An AUA perspective - Session Highlights

SCOTTSDALE, AZ USA (UroToday.com) - This insightful talk was presented by Dr. William Bohnert, who is president of the American Urological Association.

sufuPediatric urology is viewed as the pioneer in the evolution of subspecialty training within urology beginning in the 1960-1970s. More recently, the Society of Pediatric Urology and the American Board of Urology (ABU) worked together to create the Certificate of Qualification (CoQ) for pediatric urology. Later on, the ABU and American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology collaborated with the American Board of Medical Specialties to develop a combined core curriculum and establish accredited fellowships in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery.

He stressed that the development of subspecialty certification should not prevent fully trained and certified urologists from evaluating and treating patients in the areas of pediatric urology or FPMRS.
