A randomized clinical trial to evaluate the preventive effect of cranberry juice (UR65) for patients with recurrent urinary tract infection, "Beyond the Abstract," by Satoshi Takahashi, MD

BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study showed that the female population, mostly postmenopausal women, obtained preventive efficacy against recurrence of UTI when they received cranberry juice once daily. There have been surprisingly few studies about the prevention of recurrence of UTI in the postmenopausal population. Therefore, this study could be invaluable for that population.

Interestingly, the patients in this study could drink cranberry juice (UR65) without any gastrointestinal upset, although some studies reported this as an adverse effect occurring in a not negligible number of patients in Europe and the USA.

Our study showed that taking cranberry juice for 24 weeks could prevent the recurrence of UTI. To date, regrettably, we do not have a definitive concept about the appropriate duration to take cranberry juice regularly and whether the beneficial result is maintained after discontinuance of use. Future research should clarify this and other questions.
