Meet the Expert: Wayne J. G. Hellstrom, MD, FACS

Wayne John G. Hellstrom, MD, FACS, is Professor of Urology at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He is Chief of the Section of Male Infertility and Sexual Dysfunction at Tulane University Health Sciences Center and Chief of the Section of Urology at Charity Hospital of New Orleans. He is also on staff at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, New Orleans.
Dr. Hellstrom received his medical degree from McGill University Medical School in Montreal, Canada, and he completed an internship and residency in general surgery in the McGill University Hospital system. Additional postdoctoral training included a residency in urology at the University of California, San Francisco, and a 2-year American Urological Association (AUA) Scholar funded fellowship in andrology from the University of California, Davis.
Among Dr. Hellstrom's key research interests are premature ejaculation, male infertility, surgery for erectile dysfunction (ED), Peyronie's disease, gene transfer techniques for ED, and the development of new pharmacologic vasoactive erection drugs in various animal models. He has served as principal investigator for clinical trials evaluating the use of transurethral alprostadil; the oral phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors–tadalafil, vardenafil, and sildenafil–for the treatment of ED; premature ejaculation drugs; and a number of other pharmacologic applications for ED prevention and treatment.
A prolific writer, Dr. Hellstrom has published more than 300 peer-reviewed papers, more than 150 book chapters, and numerous reviews. Notably, he is the author of The Handbook of Sexual Dysfunction and editor of the textbook Male Infertility and Sexual Dysfunction. His articles have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine, Urology, Journal of Urology, Journal of Andrology, Fertility and Sterility, Urological Research, British Journal of Urology, International Journal of Andrology, and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Hellstrom is Associate Editor of Journal of Sexual Medicine and the International Journal of Andrology and is a reviewer for many other journals. Renowned for his expertise in male sexual health, Dr. Hellstrom has been an invited speaker in the United States and abroad.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Hellstrom has received many honors throughout his distinguished career in urologic medicine. Among his awards are the Young Andrologist Award granted by the American Society of Andrology, the Hume Award for Excellence in Urological Research, and the AUA First Prize for Clinical Research. His professional memberships include the American Urological Association, American Society of Andrology, American Fertility Society/American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Société Internationale d'Urologie, and the International Society for Sexual Medicine (ISSM). Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMNA) and Society for Urologic Prosthesis (SUPs).
