LINTHICUM, MD, USA (Press Release) - June 24, 2009 - The American Urological Association (AUA) Foundation announced that Jennifer Dodson, MD, of Johns Hopkins Medicine is the 2009 recipient of the AUA Foundation/NIDDK/NCI Surgeon-Scientist Award, offered by the AUA Foundation, the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) and the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Dr. Dodson, is the first female urologist to have received the Surgeon-Scientist Award since the program began in 2005. Her project is titled, “Health Related Quality of Life in Children with Urological Disease.” “Dr. Dodson’s research on the quality of life in children with urologic diseases exemplifies the type of research this country needs to improve prevention, detection, treatment and, ultimately, cure urologic diseases,” said AUA Foundation Executive Director Sandra Vassos, MPA. “We are honored to support this young researcher in this critical field of study.” The Surgeon-Scientist Award encourages and supports the careers of young urologists who are making a long-term commitment to focus on urologic research by providing supplemental salary support for up to five years. Applicants to this award have already demonstrated the potential and desire to become independent investigators by successfully competing for the prestigious career development awards offered by the NIDDK or the NCI. Applicants must also be board-certified or board-eligible urologists, or those currently participating in a training program to obtain certification in urology. Awardees must remain in academic practice for a minimum amount of time equal to the number of years for which they receive grant support.
