ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - In a Saturday morning podium presentation Wada and colleagues from Okayama Japan characterized fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli isolated from urinary tract infections between 1994 and 2005 in their country. In the last 5 years they noted increasing incidence of complicated UTI caused by these resistant organisms.


Their data suggests that mutations in type II topoisomerases play an important role in fluoroquinolone resistant strains of E. coli, but other mechanism, such as multidrug efflux pumps and decreased cell envelop permeability may be also involved in increased resistance.
