Christopher G. Wood, MD

Christopher G. Wood, MD, FACS is an Associate Professor of Urology and Cancer Biology at the The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. He is a graduate of the Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, Graduated with Distinction and received his M.D. Degree from Northwestern University Medical School, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Wood completed surgery and urology training at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital/McGaw Medical Center, Chicago, Illinois for Urology Residency and his Fellowship at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, Texas in Urologic Oncology. He is a board certified Diplomate of The American Board of Urology (2000).

His areas of interest include the role of surgery in metastatic and locally advanced renal cell carcinoma, nephron sparing surgery for renal cell carcinoma, orthotopic bladder substitution after cystectomy, neoadjuvant multimodal therapy for GU malignancies, post-chemotherapy surgical consolidation for testis cancer, surgical management of prostate cancer, molecular biology of renal cell carcinoma tumorigenesis, progression, and metastasis.

Dr. Wood received honors and awards from:

* Phi Eta Sigma Freshman Honor Society
* Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society
* Alpha Omega Delta Premedical Honor Society
* Sigmund S. Winton Biochemistry Award
* Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society
* National Kidney Foundation/American Foundation for Urologic Disease Resident Research Scholarship
* Dr. Leander W. Riba Clinical Urology Award
* American Foundation For Urologic Disease Research Scholarship (Pfizer Scholar)
* American Cancer Society Clinical Oncology Research Scholarship
* Travel Award: International Symposium on Prostate Growth
* ASCO/AACR Clinical Cancer Research Workshop, Vale, Colorado, 1997
* Elected member of Associate Member Council for American Association for Cancer Research (Chairman: Website Committee and Essay Contest)
* CaPCure Young Investigator Award
* Selected: Guide to America's Top Physicians, 2003
* Selected: H Texas Magazine, "Top Doctors in Houston," 2004

Dr. Wood's completed and on-going Research Support:

* "TGFbeta Receptor Biology In Human Renal Cell Carcinoma"
2004-2009
Description: To identify mechanisms that underlie RCC carcinogenesis and progression, and to develop targeted therapy based on these mechanisms.
Role: Co-Investigator

* "A Phase II Study Of Route Of Oncophage (HSPPC-96) In Subjects With Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma"
2003 - 2006 Antigenics, Inc.
Description: Heat shock vaccine therapy for metastatic renal cell carcinoma to determine whether intradermal or subcutaneous administration of HSPPC-96 leads to a higher response proportion and to assess the frequency of adverse events in subjects receiving HSPPC-96 at noted routes, and to determine survival.
Role: Principal Investigator

* "A Multi-Center, Randomized Phase III Study Of Adjuvant Oncophage Versus Observation In Patients With High Risk Of Recurrence After Surgical Treatment For Renal Cell Carcinoma"
2001 - 2007 Antigenics, Inc.
Description: This study will ascertain whether patients randomized to receive Oncophage treatment for surgically resected, locally advanced renal cell carcinoma with a high risk of recurrence have a statistically longer survival than patients with no adjuvant treatment.
Role: Principal Investigator

* "Biobehavioral Effects Of Emotional Expression In Cancer"
2002-02-11 ~ 2007-01-31 National Cancer Institute
Description: The proposed study will assess the psychological and physiological benefits of an emotional expression intervention in patients with renal cancer.
Role: Collaborator

* "A Sexual Counseling Intervention For Prostate Cancer Survivors"
2002-07-01 ~ 2005-06-30
Description: This grant is for a 4-year program of research to develop and evaluate a sexual counseling intervention for men after treatment for localized prostate cancer. The goals are to increase help-seeking for medical treatments and to enhance sexual satisfaction in both man and his partner. The design is a randomized trial of a traditional, face-to-face intervention format, an internet-based self-help version, or a 3-month waitlist control group.
Role: Collaborator

* "Identifying Novel Alterations in Gene and Protein Expression Associated with the Metastatic Phenotype and Response to Systemic Therapy in Metatstatic and Locally Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma"
2004 Seattle Genetics, Inc.
Description: Examine alterations in gene and protein in tissues obtained from patients with metastatic and locally advanced renal cell carcinoma. Fresh tissue obtained at surgery from primary and metastatic cancer foci of patients with metastatic and locally advanced renal cell carcinoma will be used for RNA and protein isolation and primary cell culture for characterization using gene array and proteomic techniques to identify alterations in the expression patterns between primary tumors and metastatic foci.
Role: Principal Investigator
