Speakers: Experts from the AUA Prostate-Specific Antigen Best Practice Statement Update Panel—Peter Carroll, M.D., Chair and Kirsten Greene, MD The American Urological Association (AUA) and the AUA Foundation believe that early detection of and risk assessment for prostate cancer should be offered to asymptomatic men 40 years of age or older who have a life expectancy of at least 10 years. Men who wish to be screened should have both a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test and a digital rectal exam (DRE). This program will provide information to learn more about the pros and cons of prostate screening. Program objectives: 1. Discuss prostate screening and common prostate conditions 2. Identify current American Urological Association recommendations for prostate screening –PSA and DRE tests 3. Describe the role of the following factors in prostate screening: • free and total PSA • patient age • PSA velocity • PSA density • family history • ethnicity • prior biopsy history • the impact of other health conditions on prostate screening 4. Explain the prostate biopsy procedure 5. Identify questions to ask health care providers regarding individual prostate screening benefits and risks The American Urological Association Foundation (AUA Foundation) is concerned that two major studies about prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing may present conflicting information to patients about the value of this critical prostate-cancer screening test. The benefits of regular screening and early detection should not be discounted in the overall population. Participants in the live program will have an opportunity to present questions to the speaker panel at the conclusion of the program. This forum will be recorded for future on-line viewing. |
