INCREASED LIKELIHOOD OF BENIGN HISTOLOGY IN FEMALE PATIENTS WITH RENAL MASSES

Abstract 90

Snyder and colleagues from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reviewed the records of 1184 patients who underwent nephrectomy for renal masses measuring less than 7 cm. Patients with vascular invasion, lymph node or distant metastases, or a prior history of RCC were excluded. Of 815 renal tumors, 16.5% of cases had evidence of benign disease on final pathology. The vast majority of benign tumors (n = 87) were renal oncocytomas. Interestingly, women were almost twice as likely to exhibit benign renal masses as male patients (Hazard ratio = 1.8, 95% CI 1.2 to 2.6, P = 0.002).
