ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - Dr. Douglas Storm from the group at Geisinger, Danville, Pennsylvania, reported their experience with robotic-assisted laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy. To date, 34 patients have undergone the procedure. The mean age was 36 years (18 – 62 years) and the mean BMI 26.28 kg/m². The mean surgeon time on the console was 83 minutes (63 – 115 minutes) with a mean total operative time of 173 minutes (113 – 269 minutes). The warm ischemic time was less than 30 seconds in all cases. This group’s technique consists of placement of a hand port after the kidney has been fully mobilized and the vessels dissected. This allows for safe hilar stapling and organ removal. No intraoperative complications occurred. Postoperative complications included ileus (3 patients), wound infection and atelectasis in 1 patient each. The mean hospital stay was 2.3 days (1 – 4 days). This series demonstrates that robotic-assisted laparoscopic donor nephrectomy can be performed safely with low complication rates and outcomes similar to standard laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy.
