HYDATID DISEASE

Diagnosis

  • Casoni's test is a valuable skin test for diagnosis
  • Plain radiograghs and CT scans are also useful in the identification of disease

Surgical Management

  • Simple surgical excision to various emergency surgical procedures for obstruction and abscess formation, including nephrectomy

AMEBIASIS

Diagnosis

  • Symptoms include fever, renal pain, and hematuria (sometimes seen in association with renal vein thrombosis)
  • Diagnosis usually is established on biopsy

Medical Management

  • Treatment aims to contain and control amebic systemic infection, which is often lethal
  • Drugs include: metronidazole, ornidazole, tinidazole, and chloroquine

Surgical Managment

  • Surgery must be undertaken after control of infection has been achieved
