The editor of UroToday International Journal welcomes original contributions on topics of interest and importance to urologists. To make the submission process as efficient as possible, authors are asked to adhere to the following guidelines.

Manuscript Submission

We at UIJ utilize an independent submission portal called Editorial Manager. Authors must submit their manuscripts through the web-based tracking system at http://uij.edmgr.com. The manuscript itself MUST be a Microsoft Word document (.doc). The site contains instructions and advice on how to use the system, guidance on the creation/scanning and saving of electronic art, and supporting documentation. In addition to allowing authors to submit manuscripts on the web, the site allows authors to follow the progression of their manuscript through the peer review process. Support is provided through the Editorial Manager's “Help” section. Authors are asked NOT to mail hard copies of the manuscript to the editorial office. They may, however, fax to the editorial office any material that cannot be submitted electronically. 

All manuscripts should start with a title page detailing: (1) the title of the article, (2) full first names, middle initials, and surnames of each author, (3) the postal and e-mail addresses of the corresponding author, and (4) any financial, research, or writing contributors. Correspondence during submission will be with the submitting author. A maximum of five authors can be listed on the Editorial Manager submission screen. However, all authors should be listed on the title page of the manuscript. An e-mail address is essential.

Manuscript preparation must conform to the standards of the International Conference of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). A complete breakdown of the ICMJE requirements, as well as manuscript preparation tips, can be accessed at: www.icmje.org.

UIJ DOES NOT CHARGE article processing fees to authors. Submission, peer review, and publication are free.

Author Agreement Forms

A cover letter and author agreement are required with each submission. The cover letter should confirm that neither the paper itself nor any of its sections or original data have been submitted elsewhere. The agreement forms are comprised of the Submission form, License form, and Conflict of Interest form. There are three options to submit the form:    

1. Fill out the PDF and upload via the submission portal (digital signatures required)
2. Print and scan the form, and then upload into the online submission portal
3. Print and fax the form to the journal office at 1-510-540-0930

• Submission Form
  • The submission form is within the author agreements and should confirm that the paper has not been submitted elsewhere. Manuscripts submitted without all signatures on all statements will be returned to the authors immediately. Electronic signatures are acceptable.
• License Form
  • Papers accepted must be licensed for publication in the journal. The License form is included in the author agreement forms. Authors will be required to license copyright in their paper to UroToday, Inc. Copyright licensing is a condition of publication, and papers will not be passed to the publisher for production unless copyright has been licensed.
• Conflict of Interest Form
  • All authors and reviewers must disclose any potential conflict of interest relevant to the subject of the investigation. Conflicts are indicated in the Conflict of Interest form signed by all authors as part of the author agreements. Conflicts for each author should also be stated in an acknowledgment section at the end of the manuscript.

Authors are expected to submit complete and correct manuscripts.

Simultaneous Submissions and Plagiarism

The editors of this journal support the guidelines established by the ICMJE. UIJ is a primary source periodical. By signing the author agreement forms, the authors declare that the manuscript is not a simultaneous submission (i.e., currently submitted to any other journal). Additionally, the manuscript should be original and should not contain information that has already been reported in a published article. This is considered plagiarism. If redundant publication is attempted or occurs without notification from the authors, editorial action will be taken.

Note: When a revision is requested and returned to the editors, this is not an automatic acceptance of the manuscript. Revised manuscripts will be reviewed a second time, considering all revisions, before final resolution. If a manuscript is sent for revision to an author, the revised manuscript must be returned within 30 days. If it is not received at the editorial office within this timeframe, it may be treated as a new submission and sent out for review as in the first phase of the peer review process.  

All manuscripts are subject to copy editing and formatting to conform with UIJ standards.

Proofs and Corrections

The corresponding author will receive electronic page proofs to check the article before publication. Portable document format (PDF) files of the pages and support documents will be sent to the corresponding author by e-mail. Complete instructions will be provided with the e-mail for downloading and printing the files and for faxing the corrected page proofs to the editorial office. 

It is the author's responsibility to ensure that there are no errors in the proofs. Changes that have been made to conform to journal style will stand if they do not alter the author's meaning. Only the most critical changes to the accuracy of the content will be made. Changes that are stylistic or are a reworking of previously accepted material will be disallowed. The editorial office reserves the right to disallow extensive alterations. Proofs must be checked carefully and corrections provided within 24 to 48 hours of receipt. Proofs will be sent by e-mail as an Acrobat PDF (portable document format) file. All manuscripts will be formatted to conform with UIJ standards of content and style.  

Authors are asked to return their corrected proofs to the editor within two business days of receipt.

Manuscript Submissions 

Authors are welcome to send manuscripts on various aspects of urology and its associated specialties. Please choose the type of contribution that best fits the content of the manuscript: original study, case report, review, or commentary. All articles on various aspects of urology and its associated specialties should include the following:

Manuscript Preparation

Units/Abbreviations 


Authors should follow the AMA system of units (except for blood pressure, which will continue to be expressed in mmHg) (see Grange RI.BJU 1996; 78: 961-963). Use numerals for all numbers, except when beginning a sentence. Authors should limit their use of abbreviations, but when used, they should be used consistently throughout the text.

Financial Support for Research

All funding, support, or sponsorship for research should be identified in an “Acknowledgment” section at the end of the manuscript. The specific role of the funding organization or sponsor should be specified.

Names of Drugs, Products, and Equipment

Capitalize brand-name drugs, manufactured products, and equipment; do not capitalize generic drugs. References to brand names should include the city and state or country of the manufacturer. For example: The patient was given 1 tablet of acetaminophen (Tylenol; Johnson & Johnson, New Brunswick, New Jersey).

References

References should conform to EndNote "annotated" citations. References in text should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear and indicated by Arabic numerals in brackets (i.e., [1,2]). There should be no more than 30 references, except in reviews or original articles. Examples are given below.

Provide the names of all authors if there are two or less. If there are more than two, list the first two followed by "et al." Abbreviate names of journals according to the listings in PubMed.

We recommend the use of a tool such as EndNote or Reference Manager for reference management and formatting.

Digital Illustrations and Tables

Digital illustrations and tables should be kept to a necessary minimum and their information should not be duplicated in the text. No more than 10 illustrations should accompany the manuscript for clinical articles. Magnifications for photomicrographs should be supplied and graphs should be labeled clearly. Reference to illustrations, numbered with Arabic numerals, must be provided in the text. Blurry or unrecognizable illustrations are not acceptable. Tables should be numbered and referred to in the text. In general, they should present summarized rather than individual raw data.

UIJ Accepts the Following Formats for Figure Files

• EPS (for diagrams)
• TIFF (for diagrams, photographs, and screen captures
• PNG (for photos or images)
• JPEG
• BMP

All illustrations should be supplied in color. Aerial or Helvetica font is preferred for text within figures; Courier may be used if a monospaced font is required. Text should be legible when the illustration is scaled to a resolution of 300 dpi. Image resolutions must be at least 300 dpi for photographs, 900 to 1200 dpi for line images, and 500 to 900 dpi for combination images. Quality should be sufficient for screen and desktop printing. UIJ has the right to limit the number of images published per article.

Each original figure must be uploaded as a separate image file and not embedded into the manuscript or other Word document. Figure titles should be placed at the end of the manuscript, separate from the figures.

Video clips may be submitted for posting on the journal website. They are subject to peer review. Video files must be compressed to the smallest possible size that still allows for high resolution and quality presentation. The size of each clip should not exceed 10 MB. File size limitation is intended to ensure that end-users are able to download and view files in a reasonable timeframe. If files exceed the specified size limitation, they will not be posted to the website and will be returned to the author for resubmission.

UroToday International Journal is continually seeking new cases for our component within UIJ, which is the "Case Diagnosis" section. Therein, authors submit an image file and a patient presentation description along with five possible diagnoses as choices from which readers can make their own diagnoses.

The editorial board of UIJ invites you to submit your own "Case Diagnosis" for inclusion in an upcoming issue.

To participate, simply submit the following items for consideration:

• Five potential diagnoses
• A detailed and referenced description around the correct answer
