CANCUN, MEXICO (UroToday.com) - Coverage of the 25th Annual World Congress of Endourology and SWL - Cancun, Mexico - Thursday November 1, 2007

Dr. Jaffe and the group from Montsouris, Paris, France presented their comparison of the laparoscopic vs robotic approach to radical prostatectomy. A matched paired analysis with 133 patients in each group was performed. The transfusion rate was 3% vs 9.8% for LRP vs RALP. Conversion from RALP to LRP was needed in on 4 cases. They were no conversion to open surgery in the LRP group.

The overall positive margin rate was 15.8% for LRP vs 19.5% for RALP. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that in the hands of vastly experienced laparoscopic surgeons, the outcomes for LRP are equivalent to RALP.
