ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - The groups from Duke and Loma Linda presented their initial clinical trial with a novel ureteral access sheath. The currently available access sheaths rely on axial dilation for insertion, which creates shearing forces on the urothelium. A new ureteral access sheath was developed that relies on radial forces which should cause less trauma. The device is inserted in a 9.5 Fr configuration, then once it is in position, the internal balloon is inflated to 20 ATM, expanding the sheath to a 12 Fr internal and 14 Fr external diameter. The access sheath was successfully placed in 100% of the 27 patients tested, including 4 who failed conventional sheath placement. No complications were reported and no ureteral lacerations or abrasions were seen. This novel ureteral access sheath may provide easier insertion, especially in more difficult cases.
