ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - Dr. Kenneth Pace from the University of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, presented the results of the first multicenter randomized trial of slower shock wave frequency for the treatment of proximal ureteric stones. This study included 157 patients from three major academic, large volume lithotripsy centers in Canada. All stones measured at least 5 mm. In the 74 patients receiving a rate of 60 shocks/ minute, the stone free rate was 67.3 % at 3 months when compared to 83 patients treated at 120 shocks/ minute (p = 0.031). Although the treatment time was longer in the slow rate group there was no increase in adverse events and significantly less auxiliary procedures (31.1 % vs 47 %; p = 0.042).
