AUA 2007 - Does Endourological Procedures Cause Sexual Dysfunction? Show Comments PDF Print E-mail

ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - Endourologic management of stone diseases causes transient male sexual dysfunction. This observation was made by a group of Israeli investigators in a prospective study using an International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) the day before, two weeks and three months after the procedure. Fifty male patients underwent endourologic treatment including ureteroscopy (25), retrograde intrarenal surgery (9) and PCNL (16) for stone disease. Sixty-six percent of patients had a stent placed. A statistically significant decrease in erectile function, intercourse satisfaction, orgasmic function, sexual desire and overall satisfaction was noted. This dysfunction was unrelated to chronic disease, age, smoking, preoperative stenting, type of procedure or operative time. Interestingly, the average decrease in erectile function was more pronounced in the stinted group for all domains of the IIES questionnaire. Fortunately, the sexual function returned to baseline within three months of their treatment. This information is important for appropriate preoperative patient counseling. It is unfortunate that these investigators did not include this evaluation in their endourologic female patients also!
