ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - (ABST#213 - Kidney Cancer Basic Research I) The investigators used Seldi-TOF-MS technology to identify tumor specific protein profiles in the serum from 50 patients with clear cell RCC as compared to normal controls. Differentially expressed proteins were identified from tryptic in-gel-digests from relevant 2D gels. Through these experiments, the authors identified serum amyloid A (SAA-1) as a serum protein increased in the serum of patients with clear cell RCC. They found elevated levels of SAA-1 in patients with tumor versus normal control, and also elevated levels in patients with metastatic disease relative to those with localized disease. They concluded that SAA-1 is a serum marker for clear cell RCC and expression correlate with disease aggressiveness.
