ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - Dr Weight presented a review a series of renal tumors treated with percutaneous RFA at the Cleveland Clinic that compared the radiographic and pathologic findings. Thirty-six patients treated with RFA with at least 6 months of follow-up were included in the analysis. Radiologic success (no central or nodular enhancement) was achieved in 85% patients and pathologic success (no cancer cells on biopsy at 6 months) was achieved in 65%. Of the patients who showed no enhancement on follow up imaging, 6 (24%) had a positive biopsy. The authors suggested that MRI and CT are inadequate for determining successful destruction of renal tumors, and that a post-treatment biopsy should be added to RFA follow-up protocols.
