CANCUN, MEXICO (UroToday.com) - Coverage of the 25th Annual World Congress of Endourology and SWL - Cancun, Mexico - Thursday November 1st 2007 The development of inexpensive pelvic trainers, for practicing laparoscopic skills, has been criticized for the “time-lag” of the image created by the less costly, small video cameras. However, education researchers in the U.K. have shown that the delay in hand movement relative to movement perceived on the monitor actually improved the learning curve of skill acquisition for the laparoscopic vesicourethral anastomosis. (Abstract MP29-10) They found that novices were on average 1.7 times quicker at mastering the task if they trained with the time-lag, as compared to real time movement. The use of inexpensive trainer models for initial laparoscopic skills training in our trainees will make this type of simulation more widely available in residency programs.
