CANCUN, MEXICO (UroToday.com) - Coverage of the 25th Annual World Congress of Endourology and SWL - Cancun, Mexico - Wednesday October 31st 2007 The group from the University of Tennessee presented an abstract reporting the results of their evaluation of en bloc ligation of the renal hilum during a laparoscopic nephrectomy. Ligation was performed using a 45mm endovascular stapler using a vascular load and all patients had a CT angiogram 12 months or more following the surgery to evaluate for the development of an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). 28 patients completed the evaluation and none developed an AVF. This abstract adds to the literature that seems to support that en bloc stapler ligation of the renal hilum, at least with short term follow up, appears to be safe. Session: Laparoscopy: Kidney I
