CANCUN, MEXICO (UroToday.com) - Coverage of the 25th Annual World Congress of Endourology and SWL - Cancun, Mexico - Thursday November 1st 2007

Computed tomography should be considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of ureteric calculi. Researchers at Cambridge in the U.K. evaluated 136 patients presenting with renal colic and found to have a ureteric stone on CT imaging. (Abstract MP29-7) Only 67%, and then 70%, of the stones were identified on the KUB and re-look KUB analysis. So even when stones are identified on CT the KUB has poor sensitivity and specificity for ureteric calculi. Patient suspected of presenting with a ureteral stone should be initially evaluated with CT imaging.
