ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - (ABST#800 Technology & Instruments: Laparoscopy, Ureteroscopy (III)) - Gregory Hruby and the group from Columbia, New York led by Dr. Jaime Landman, presented their innovative work with porcine transmural bladder cryoablation. This was achieved by a combined laparoscopic (to protect the intra-abdominal contents) and cystoscopic (to deliver the cryoablative energy) approach using a novel 38 cm cryoprobe in both an intravesical saline and CO2 environment. Similar to previous studies on the renal collecting system, there were no leaks noted on post op cystography at either 1 or 3 weeks, despite histopathological evidence of full thickness necrosis. This study will likely lead to the evaluation of cryoablative techniques for highly selected bladder tumors, but will need to be tested in animal tumor models as an initial step. Of, note, this poster was identified by the moderators as the best poster in the session.
