BERKELEY, CA (UroToday.com) - Laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy (LSCP) has been slow to be embraced as a viable surgical option for patients with vaginal vault prolapse due to the challenges of laparoscopic suturing and knot tying. However, these clinical researchers have very nicely shown in a retrospective review that the laparoscopic sacrocolpopexy is as effective as the abdominal sacrocolpopexy (ASCP) for the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse. Their technique utilizes bone anchors in the sacral promontory to secure the mesh after it is sutured to the vagina. In this study 25 patients underwent LSCP and 22 patients underwent open ASCP. The study does not indicate how patients were chosen for each of the two procedures. However, there was no significant difference observed in the demographic characteristics of these two patient groups. The LCSP group had significantly longer operative times compared to the ASCP group. However, the mean estimated blood loss and mean length of hospitalization was significantly less for the LSCP group. The success rate, admittedly in this small retrospective study, was 100% at 5.9 months in the LSCP group and 95% success in the ASCP group at 11.0 months. Further prospective randomized studies with quality of life evaluations will be important to further support the application of this minimally invasive therapy for patients with vaginal vault prolapse.
