ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - Highlights in this session included Astract 710 by Anthony Atala’s group demonstrating that urothelial and smooth muscle progenitor cells can be grown from urine. Abstract 711 by Dix Poppas and his group showed that a novel elastomeric polyurethane-urea hydrogel provides an ideal substitute for the bladder, and it is biocompatible, non-inflammatory, and resistant to infection. Abstract 713 funded from the NIH showed that minced skin could serve as a potential source of tubular conduit regeneration.

Abstract 715 presented by Ellen Shapiro gave compelling evidence that the glanular urethra has an ectodermal and endodermal component. Abstract 716 demonstrated that there are age related changes in the urethral plate extracellular matrix. The older patients had a more unfavorable extracellular matrix environment. Abstract 717 showed that Estradiol upregulates ATF3 promoter activity in vitro.

Abstract 718 concluded that bladder contractile function is reduced in patients with exstrophy. Abstract 719 showed that in young obstructed rabbits, dysfunction increased to a maximum in 7 days and to a compensated state at 14 days. Abstract 720 demonstrated that Mammalian Target of Rapamycin is critical for hypoxia and stretch mediated proliferation in bladder smooth muscle. The session ended with Abstract 721 concluding that a broad variety ofcytokines are expressed in primary refluxing ureters indicating an ongoing tissue remodeling at the UVJ.
