There are theoretical concerns about performing urethroplasty on the elderly because intercurrent illness in this population could result in higher complication rates and lower success rates, especially when flaps or grafts are used.

Lessons Learned From Review of Patients with Bulbar Strictures Secondary to Straddle Injuries

BERKELEY, CA (UroToday Inc.) - A straddle injury occurs when the relatively immobile bulbar urethra is crushed against the under surface of the pubic symphysis. Urethral stricture often develops. In contrast to posterior urethral disruptions, straddle injuries do not coexist with pelvic fracture, and the pendulous urethra is usually spared.

Dr. A. Mohr and colleagues of Newark, NJ analyzed use of AAST grades in traumatic injuries of 116 patients who incurred penile or scrotal trauma over a period of 11½ years. Some received AAST severity scores at the time of injury, others were classified retrospectively. They communicated their findings in the December 2003 issue of the Journal of Urology.
