CANCUN, MEXICO (UroToday.com) - Coverage of the 25th Annual World Congress of Endourology and SWL - Cancun, Mexico - Thursday November 1st 2007

The authors described their experienced with percutaneous nephrolithomy in the management of staghorn calculi. An evaluation of the outcome and complications in a large group of patients in a tertiary stone center was done. There were 509 patients having partial or complete staghorn calculi. The mean age was 53.8 years. Sixteen percent of the cases required multiple access tract with no statistical significance between single tracts as to transfusion rate (0.7%-1.2% p=0.24). However, their updated data showed a higher tranfusion rate from the Amplatz dilated group compared with ballon dilated group (p=0.001). The stone free rate at discharge and at 3 months follow-up were 78% and 91% respectively. This study emphasized the role of PCNL for staghorn calculi and also stresses the importance of having a full array of endourological equipment at hand.
