CHARLESTON, SC (Press Release) - At the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology (SUFU) meeting, National Association For Continence (NAFC), Executive Director Nancy Muller proudly presented Rodney A. Appell, MD, with the organization’s latest Continence Care Champion (CCC) award on Saturday, March 1, in Miami, Florida. Dr. Appell is a highly respected surgeon in female urology and now joins ranks with only three other SUFU recipients. Pfizer, the makers of Detrol LA, sponsored this reward. The SUFU Board of Directors nominated members of its society who demonstrate leadership in the field of incontinence through accomplishments in research, enrichment of clinical practice, and education. NAFC Board of Directors then chose one recipient from the group of nominees. Dr. Appell is Professor of Urology and Gynecology and Chief, Division of Voiding Dysfunction and Female Urology, at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. He holds the F. Brantley Scott Chair in Urology at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston. Upon completion of his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, he went on to complete a surgical residency at George Washington University Medical Center and a urology residency at Yale. In addition to being invited to participate in over 220 lectureships and symposia, Dr. Appell has published over 100 full papers or editorials in peer-reviewed journals, authored nearly four dozen book chapters, and delivered 850 educational talks and presentations both across the U.S. and around the globe. In presenting the award, Ms. Muller enumerated a litany of Dr. Appell’s contributions, concluding her remarks by saying, “Without question, NAFC is a stronger entity because of his involvement over the years.” Dr. Appell served on the Board of Directors of the National Association For Continence for 18 years, most recently as Vice-Chairman and subsequently, Chairman of the Board. Fellow Board member, Eric Rovner, MD, at the Medical University of South Carolina, said, “Dr. Appell has a level of commitment we can all aspire to attain. Because of his dedication to advancing science in the area of pelvic floor disorders, he continuously improves healthcare for incontinent patients.” Though this award focuses on a notable member of SUFU, other distinguished medical societies have been recognized by NAFC’s CCC awards program as well. These groups include: American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS), Society of Urology Nurses and Associates (SUNA), Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), American Geriatrics Society (AGS), American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Nurse Practitioners in Women’s Health (NPWH), Society of Women in Urology (SWIU), Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) and, most recently, the Association of Physician Assistants in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APAOG).
About the National Association For Continence (NAFC) The National Association For Continence is a 501(c)3 corporation whose mission is threefold: 1) to educate the public about the causes, diagnosis categories, treatment options, and management alternatives for incontinence, voiding dysfunction, nocturnal enuresis, and related pelvic floor disorders; 2) to network with other organizations and agencies to elevate the visibility and priority given to these areas; and 3) to advocate on behalf of consumers who suffer from such symptoms as a result of disease or other illness, obstetrical, surgical or other trauma, or deterioration due to the aging process itself.
