CNW via NewsEdge Corporation : STOUFFVILLE, ON - Stratasis® TF, a pubourethral sling for surgical reinforcement and strengthening of pelvic tissues, is now available from Cook (Canada) Inc. for the Canadian marketplace. Used in the minimally invasive treatment of urinary incontinence, Stratasis TF provides tension-free support and requires no suturing or anchoring. To address variations in patient anatomy, Stratasis TF is the first system designed to accommodate either antegrade or retrograde placement. Cook's new Stratasis TF also is one of the few slings able to be placed using minimally invasive techniques.

"We are proud to offer a superior alternative to products presently available to Canadians for the relief of urinary incontinence. Socially, emotionally and otherwise, the quality of life for these Canadians will be greatly improved with Stratasis TF," said Bill Bobbie, President, Cook (Canada) Inc.

Stratasis TF is constructed of small intestinal submucosa (SIS), a natural biomaterial that supports tissue remodeling. The patient's cells, tissues and blood vessels rapidly infiltrate the surgical site, replacing the biomaterial in time with natural tissues that provide pubourethral support. SIS is carefully processed to produce a safe, sterile and biocompatible material. Compared to synthetic implant materials, the risk of infection or erosion is reduced with SIS.

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) is the most common form of incontinence in women, often caused by pregnancy and childbirth, menopause and the character of the female urinary tract. The resulting relaxation or weakening of the pelvic floor muscles that support the bladder can cause bladder leakage during moments of physical stress such as coughing, laughing or sneezing. The Stratasis TF pubourethral sling, which is placed using minimally invasive surgery to restore support to the bladder, can often treat this condition, reducing or eliminating SUI.
