PITTMAN, NJ (Press Release) - It takes time to get used to any new job, and working in an operating room is no exception. For those new to working in urologic operating rooms, the procedures, instruments and medications associated with this nursing specialty can appear a little daunting. To help this group of nurses, the Society of Urologic Nurses and Associates (SUNA) has created the Cysto Room Survival Manual: Guidelines for Urologic Endoscopy, a resource for urologic nurses new to the "cysto" room (a dedicated operating room for cystoscopy, or bladder procedures). The manual also comes with nearly 30 laminated preference cards detailing the same information found in the text that nurses can use on the job. "Many of our members working in cystoscopy rooms requested information they could use as they settle into new jobs," said SUNA President Saundra Seidel, APRN-BC, CNOR, CUCNS. "The Survival Manual is a great resource that meets these needs and goes a step further with the laminated cards and the newly developed cystoscope disinfection/sterilization clinical practice guideline." The Cysto Room Survival Manual, edited by Marie Page, BSPA, RN, CURN, addresses common bladder procedures, care and sterilization of instruments, common abbreviations, urologic medications and solutions, handling specimens in the OR, and positioning patients under anesthesia. The manual details each procedure's purpose, the supplies and instruments needed, as well as any special notes about the procedure. While institutions maintain individual policies, this manual is applicable across the United States because most operating rooms use the same type of set-up, instruments, equipment, irrigating solutions and supplies. Page and Seidel, along with Susan Bowles, RN, CNOR, and Frances P. Foley, BS, RN, CURN, served as authors of the manual. The Cysto Room Survival Manual is $39 for members and $49 for non-members.
