Abstract 480 CpG hypermethylation has been associated with advanced prostate cancer.Enokida et al presented examined differences in methylation between prostate cancer patients with and without a history of smoking using 3 genes APC, MDR1, and GSTP1. The methylation score (M score) was significantly higher in current smokers compared to patients who had never smoked. Hypermethylation was also associated with advanced pathologic stage, Gleason score, and elevated serum PSA. This is the first study to directly link gene methylation to smoking in prostate cancer patients. Supported by an unrestrictional educational grant from Sanofi-Aventis.
