ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - (ABST#497 - Kidney Cancer Treatment & Evaluation I) The authors examined outcomes of 109 tumors treated with RFA and 192 tumors treated with cryoablation. Biopsy was performed at 6 months post therapy in 37 RFA patients and 97 cryotherapy patients. Success (defined as a negative biopsy) was noted in only 64.8% of RFA patients and 93.8% in cryotherapy patients. Of those with a positive biopsy in the RFA group, 46.2% demonstated no enhancement on a post treatment MRI. In the cryotherapy group, all positive biopsies were preceded by an MRI that demonstrated enhancement. The authors conclude that lack of enhancement on imaging is insufficient for determining successful tumor ablation with RFA.
