ANAHEIM, CA (UroToday.com) - Monday's sessions at the AUA Annual Meeting in Anaheim showcased several moderated posters. One standout presentation (which also won prizes) is summarized below. Inman and colleagues studied PD-L1 which is a cell surface glycoprotein implicated in T cell function. Using immunohistochemistry they assessed 280 bladder cancer tumors, including its role in high-risk tumors which failed BCG therapy. PD-L1 expression was correlated with tumor stage: expression was observed in 7% of pTa, 16% pT1, 23% pT2, 30% pT3/4 and 45% of CIS tumors. Eleven of twelve patients who failed BCG showed high expression of PD-L1 I granulomas. On multivariate analysis, factors which predicted for stage progression included high-grade pathology and PD-L1 expression (OR = 2.20, p =0.12).The authors concluded that tumor PD-L1 might be responsible for local BCG failure mechanism by crippling T cells which are normally involved in the guarding against the progression of tumor cells into the muscularis propria.
